Root Causes

Free World U is an accredited online pre-K-12 school. It was inspired by the notion that there was a root cause to social dysfunction and the easiest and most direct way of attacking that was through education. A book that had a great deal of influence on me was called The Mature Mind by Overstreet. The theme of the book was that our primary challenge as we move through life is to become an other-centered person. Infants, in order to survive, first and foremost, take care of their own needs. In the second year of life people come face-to-face with the reality that there are others that have needs also and these need to be factored in to their endeavors. This usually involves a struggle. Eric Erickson wrote a book called Childhood and Society in which he described seven stages of development. This particular one was classified as the second stage. If this stage is not mastered, subsequent stages will not have the proper foundation and fail typically.

This, I believe, should be the central focus of education. But we live in an educational society in which these things are barely focused on at all. Rather, our education in the K-12 arena is math and English centered. This is driven by standardized tests that are primarily math and English. And yet in our society in which we see so much of man's inhumanity to man, math and English are only a tiny part of life's challenges.

It's all about priority. What is important? And to make things even more confusing, some of the most educated people just don't get it. And these people have managed to find their way into a position of power and control.

I have spoken to many people about this and over 90% of them agree. And yet the few have managed to control the majority in our democracy. Free World U offers a way out. If you're not going to use it and it doesn't help you to understand the world in which we live, you don't have to learn it unless of course you want to. And we'll make it so easy to master that it won't seem like work at all. Our school is fully accredited and the people at the accrediting agency agree that the needs of children should be at the center of education – we call this "child centered education."
